Bio

Personal Information for Dr. Raymond R. Brown

I was born at home on a farm. My parents were farmers and my grandparents were sharecroppers. Those long days of working on the farm from dark in the morning to dark at night taught me the value of hard work. During my last two years of high school I took on the responsibility of driving the school bus to school each day. On the farm, the church was the center of the community life and family was the core of life. Education was seen as a way to get ahead in life. My mother told me that they would sell a farm if that was required to provide money for me to go to college. On the farm a handshake of commitment was seen as binding. This is the value system in which I was brought up.

In 1973 I took on my first professional job as a college professor. I served my country as a Chaplain in the United States Air Force from 1975 thru 1978. I returned here to begin my private practice of Marriage and Family Therapy in 1978. I have been in the private practice of Marriage and Family therapy in Tennessee since 1978. My daughter, Emily, was born at Shaw AFB while I was serving in the Air Force and my son, Aaron, was born in Bradley County.

Community
I have served for the past 30 years on the board of directors (27 years as board chairman) for Bradley/Cleveland Services in Cleveland, TN. Bradley/Cleveland serves cognitively impaired citizens of our community. It provides employment for over 400 people and has an annual budget of about thirteen million dollars.

I served in the United States Air Force and The Air National Guard for 28 years. During this time I went on dozens of deployments to several countries providing support for the men and women serving in uniform. These experiences have enriched my life and brought me much satisfaction.
